Archive Afternoons at Lochaber Archive Centre ...

06 December 2023

Starts: 14:30
Ends: 16:30

From the 18th October onwards, Lochaber Archive Centre will be launching our Archive Afternoons, an initiative that has been extremely successful in our other centres. These afternoons (from 2.30pm-4.30pm) will give the public the opportunity to learn something new, chat with staff and other visitors, and interact with our collections in a fun and informal atmosphere. To begin the monthly sessions, Ken Johnston, a regular user of Lochaber Archive CentreĀ and the former Head of Planning for the Highland Council in Lochaber, will be delivering a presentation on the history of the Charles Kennedy Building. Accompanying this will be a display of items from our collections on the theme of 'Buildings and Built Heritage'. Entry is free

Online Talk: Couples, coins & coffins: archaeology, storytelling & the Glencoe landscape ...

06 December 2023

Starts: 18:00

Couples, coins & coffins: archaeology, storytelling & the Glencoe landscape

Online talk by Dr Michael Given, U. of Glasgow

Organised by Glencoe Museum. Cost £6.13. Further details and registering on Eventbrite.

Glencoe is rich not just in history, archaeology and scenery but in stories – and stories are how people explain their place in the world. Houses, glens, roads, and mountains all have their stories, and so do ordinary household objects like pots and coins. In this talk, Dr Given will tell some local stories and show how they help us to understand what places and houses meant to the people who lived in them. Many of the structures and artefacts that archaeologists discover do not have stories that have been remembered across the centuries, but part of the role of the archaeologist is to try and tease their stories out of them.
